Our Online Backup - Tips & Tricks

Windows: Exclude the Paging File (virtual memory):

The paging file is a file on your windows hard disk which is used as RAM. As such, the file changes very frequently, and is normally quite large (several Gigabytes). Therefore if you are using the Online Backup software to backup your entire hard disk, you will definately want to exclude this file. To do this, please make sure pagefile.sys is excluded as in the screenshot below.

Please note, the pagefile.sys is both a hidden file and a system file, therefore to make it visible you will need to;
a) Close the online backup software
b) Open up "My Computer" and click "Tools" then "Folder Options"
c) Click the "View" tab
d) Select "Show hidden files and folders"
e) Untick "Hide protected operating system files"

Any questions about the software?

Using Continuous Data Protection?
We suggest only choosing your core files (e.g your shared network drive on the server) if using Continuous Data Protection (rather than say the entire C drive on the server). This is because windows frequently saves files all the time in the background such as log files, temporary files and so on.

Any tips for excluding files on Windows?
Certainly. There are some files which you may want to exclude in order to reduce space. Please note that it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that the files you are excluding are not essential to your buisness and that excluding them from the backup will not affect your ability to restore your data/server if needed.

One such exclusion you may wish to put in place is the folder called ".obm" which resides within your profile folder (e.g. C:\documents and settings\administrator\.obm")
You may also wish to exclude the "Local Settings" folder within your profile as this contains a number of folders which you likely won't want to backup such as your ost file if you use Outlook, your TEMP folder and Temporary Internet Files folder.

Because there is more than one "Local Settings" folder (one for every user) and more may be created in future when you add new users, we recommend using the filter to exclude these files. Please refer to the screenshot below for some suggested settings.

Is there an instruction manual available?
